Who Is Behind China Travel Toolkit?

Hi, I’m Mars. I have lived in Shenzhen for more than 20 years and regularly travel between mainland China and Hong Kong.

I publish under the name Mars and personally manage China Travel Toolkit. This is an independent website, not an official tourism organization or a large travel media company.

Living in Shenzhen gives me useful local context about how everyday life in China works. At the same time, I try to approach every topic from the perspective of someone arriving for the first time—someone who may not know which app to download, how to pay, how to get online, or how to reach a hotel from the airport.

Why I Created This Site

When I travel abroad, I usually join a guided tour. Part of the reason is simple: independent travel can feel uncertain when you do not know how everyday things work.

Which translation app should you use? How do you order food, call a taxi, get online, or pay for something? These may be ordinary tasks for local residents, but they can become stressful when you have just arrived in an unfamiliar country.

If I were planning an independent trip abroad, I would want one reliable place where I could learn these essentials before leaving home. Having accurate, clearly organized information would help me prepare properly and feel less anxious after arrival.

That is why I created China Travel Toolkit. I want to give first-time visitors to China the kind of practical guide that I would want for myself when visiting another country.

How the Guides Are Researched

China changes quickly. App interfaces, payment rules, entry policies and transport procedures may all be updated, so I do not rely on a single source.

1. Start with the traveler’s real question. Each guide is built around a practical problem a visitor may need to solve before departure or after arrival.
2. Check current sources. Research may include official websites, platform documentation and other recent public information.
3. Add relevant local context. Where useful, I include perspective from living in Shenzhen and traveling between mainland China and Hong Kong.
4. Review before publishing. AI tools may help organize research, compare information and improve the clarity of the English writing, but every article is reviewed and edited by me before it is published.
5. Update when information changes. Important guides include a “last verified” date and are revised when I find that a process, rule or interface has changed.
