China Travel eSIM Won’t Install? What to Check Before You Fly

Quick Answer

If your China travel eSIM will not install, check whether the profile is already on your phone before scanning its code again. Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection, confirm that your device and carrier permit eSIM setup, and follow the instructions for the exact package you bought. Save the error message and contact the provider before deleting a profile or buying the same plan again.

This guide is for the installation stage before departure. If the eSIM appears in your phone but you have no data after arriving in mainland China, use our arrival-day mobile-data checks instead. An installed profile, an activated package, and a working data connection are not the same thing.

First: Is the eSIM Already Installed?

An installation warning does not always mean the profile is absent. On an iPhone, open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data and look for the new line. On a Pixel, open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Other Android phones have different menus; use the manufacturer’s current instructions.

If the travel line is present, do not scan the QR code repeatedly. Open the provider’s order or app and check its connection instructions. Some travel plans cannot connect until the phone reaches a supported destination network. For example, Airalo says many of its packages start validity when they connect at the destination, while some start on installation. That is Airalo’s policy, not a rule for every eSIM. Read the activation policy for your purchased package before deciding when to install or turn it on.

If no new line appears, continue with the setup checks below. Keep your purchase confirmation and installation details private.

Check the Setup Conditions

  1. Confirm the plan and device. Open the provider’s order and verify that this is the intended eSIM for mainland China, that your phone model supports eSIM, and that the plan is assigned to the phone you are setting up. A QR code for another order or device may not work.
  2. Use a stable internet connection. Apple’s eSIM setup guidance calls for Wi-Fi or a hotspot in the normal iPhone setup case. If a download failed on weak airport or hotel Wi-Fi, move to a reliable connection before another attempt.
  3. Check carrier restrictions. A phone locked to a different carrier may reject a travel eSIM. Ask the current carrier or the eSIM provider to confirm eligibility; do not treat a seller’s general compatibility list as approval for your individual device.
  4. Follow the provider’s method. The order may offer an app installation, QR code, link, or manual details. Use only the method and code supplied for your order. Do not post the QR code, confirmation code, EID, or account credentials in a public support thread.

If You Use an iPhone

Apple recommends checking whether the line appears in Settings → Cellular, briefly switching Airplane Mode on and off, turning an existing line off and back on, and restarting the phone. Its current support page also describes checking carrier settings and contacting the carrier if setup still fails. These steps do not override your travel provider’s package rules.

If You Use a Google Pixel

Google’s Pixel setup instructions use Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM. Google says carrier processes may differ and persistent setup problems should go to the carrier. Do not copy Pixel menu names onto a Samsung or other Android phone without checking that device’s instructions.

When the Code Says It Has Been Used

Stop before paying for another plan. A used-code message might mean the profile is already on the phone, or that the provider needs to investigate an interrupted installation. Check the SIM list and the provider’s order status, then send the exact error to official support. Do not assume a QR code can be reused or that a second scan will repair the first attempt.

Do not erase the eSIM as a routine fix. Apple warns that erasing an eSIM can require a new one from the carrier. The provider must decide whether reissue or another installation method is available for your order.

What to Send the Provider—and What Not to Send Publicly

Use the provider’s official private chat or account-support channel. Include your order reference, phone model and software version, the exact error text, whether the line appears in SIM settings, and which setup method you tried. Provide an IMEI or EID only if official support needs it, through its private channel. Never publish a live QR code, full account login, verification code, or passport image in comments.

If you fly soon and the issue remains unresolved, prepare an independent connection whose charges and coverage you have checked, and save your hotel address and first route offline. The Internet Setup Finder compares connection types; it cannot activate or repair a purchased eSIM.
