How to Use Amap in China as a Foreigner

AMap is called 高德地图 in Chinese. It can help you search for places, plan walking and public-transport routes, identify metro exits, and understand the final part of a journey. Its local map data is usually more useful in mainland China than relying only on an international map app.

What to Prepare Before Using Amap

• Install AMap Global before departure. App-store access and product names can vary by device and region, so confirm that the app opens on your phone.
• Allow precise location while navigating. Without it, the blue location marker may be too broad to identify the correct road or station exit.
• Keep mobile data available. Live search, traffic, transit information, and route changes may need a working connection.
• Save the Chinese name and address of your hotel. Do not depend on an English hotel name alone, especially when several branches have similar names.

How to Search for a Place in Amap

1. Open the search box. It may show a magnifying-glass icon or the Chinese word 搜索.
2. Paste the official Chinese name or address. Get it from the hotel, attraction, school, booking confirmation, or a local contact whenever possible.
3. Check the city and district. Businesses in different cities can have identical or very similar names.
4. Compare the details. Look at the phone number, photos, opening information, nearby roads, and distance from your current location.
5. Check the exact pin. Zoom in to see whether it marks the correct building, gate, side of the road, or station entrance.
6. Tap the route button. It may appear as 路线 or 到这去, meaning “route” or “go here.”

English search versus Chinese search

Major landmarks and transport hubs may be easy to find in English. Smaller businesses, residential compounds, restaurants, and individual hotel branches are more reliable when searched in Chinese. Avoid translating a proper name yourself. Use the official Chinese text supplied by the business or booking platform.

For example, searching only for “Shenzhen North” is less precise than using 深圳北站, the Chinese name for Shenzhen North Railway Station. The same principle applies to airports and stations in every city.

Before starting the route, compare at least two details: district, phone number, street, nearby landmark, storefront photo, or distance from a known station. This is particularly important for hotel chains, hospitals, universities, shopping malls, and restaurants with several branches.

After selecting a destination, open the route screen and choose the travel mode that matches your journey. Labels and availability can vary by app version and city.

Do not choose a route based only on the shortest estimated time. A route with one fewer transfer, a simpler station, or a shorter final walk may be easier with luggage. Recheck the route shortly before leaving because traffic, service availability, and local access can change.

For walking directions

Zoom in at the start and finish. Large malls, parks, hospitals, campuses, airports, and railway stations can have gates far apart. Amap may bring you to the correct complex without identifying the entrance you actually need.

How to Use Amap for a Metro Trip

1. Search for the final destination, not only the nearest station. Let the app compare the full trip, including the final walk.
2. Select public transport. Look for 公交.
3. Compare the suggested routes. Consider total time, number of transfers, walking distance, and the expected arrival time.
4. Check the station direction. Metro platforms are usually identified by the terminal station or direction of travel.
5. Note every transfer station. Keep the Chinese station names visible in case the English translation differs slightly.
6. Check the recommended exit. An exit such as A, B, C, or D can save a long street-level detour.
7. Open the walking segment after exiting. GPS may need a short time to settle when you return above ground.

What an exit number does not tell you

The suggested exit may still leave you on the wrong side of a mall, railway station, or large road junction. Check the street name, nearby building, and walking line before leaving the paid area. At a major railway station, follow official station signs for departures, arrivals, taxis, or metro transfers rather than relying only on the general map pin.

How to Save Your Hotel and Other Important Places

Saving a small set of verified places is more useful than collecting dozens of uncertain pins. Before departure, prepare:

• your exact hotel branch and Chinese address;
• arrival airport or railway station;
• the correct station for your next intercity journey;
• one hospital or emergency destination appropriate to your location;
• your school, host, office, or main meeting place if relevant;
• one or two attractions you already plan to visit.

The save or favorite control may appear as 收藏. Account requirements and synchronization can change by version, so do not make saved places your only record. Keep a note or screenshot with the Chinese address and phone number as well.

A simple address card

For each critical destination, save the following information together:

• English name;
• official Chinese name;
• full Chinese address;
• phone number;
• nearest metro station and exit, if confirmed;
• a screenshot of the map pin.

The app cannot find the English place name

Paste the official Chinese name or full address. If you do not have it, check the property’s official message, booking confirmation, or website. Avoid selecting a result only because its English name looks similar.

The pin is correct, but the entrance is wrong

Zoom in and look for gates, building numbers, nearby roads, station exits, and recent photos. Search the name of the specific gate if one is listed. For airports and railway stations, follow official signs once you reach the complex.

Your location marker is moving or facing the wrong way

Move into an open area, allow precise location, and wait briefly for GPS to settle. Compare the road name and surrounding buildings. The direction arrow can be unreliable while you are standing still, underground, or surrounded by tall buildings.

The app shows Chinese text you cannot understand

Take a screenshot and use an image-translation tool, but preserve the original Chinese text for searching and showing to local staff. Do not translate addresses back into English and then search the translation.

No useful transit route appears

Confirm that the start and destination are in the correct city, select public transport, and move the starting pin to a public road or station entrance. Try another local map as a cross-check. When timing matters, ask hotel or station staff and confirm important service times with the local operator.

Amap will not load when you arrive
