Step by Step: From Futian Metro to the Railway Waiting Room

1. Exit the Shenzhen Metro fare gates

Leave the metro paid area first. Do not search for a train platform while you are still inside the metro system. Keep your metro payment method separate from the high-speed-rail booking: paying for the metro does not cover the train to Hong Kong.

2. Follow “Railway Waiting Room” signs

Look for the bilingual wording Railway Waiting Room / 铁路候车室 and the national-rail symbol. Depending on where you leave the metro, the route may include a concourse walk, escalator, stairs, or lift.

Avoid relying only on the words “high speed.” The photographed station signs use Railway Waiting Room. If you ask for help, show your train number and the Chinese destination 香港西九龙.

3. Enter the railway area

At the railway entrance, present the passport linked to the booking. If an automatic gate does not read your passport, use the staffed or manual-assistance channel. Keep the booking confirmation ready so staff can see the train number and departure time.

4. Complete the security check

China Railway requires passengers and their belongings to pass security screening. Put bags through the scanner and keep the passport accessible. A short underground walk can become much longer when there is a security queue, which is why a larger first-trip buffer is safer than copying another traveler’s fastest time.

5. Find your ticket gate in the waiting room

Inside the railway waiting room, match the train number and departure time on your booking with the departure display. Your ticket or booking record should also show the ticket gate when it is assigned.

The display may contain more Chinese than you expect. The train number—such as a code beginning with G—is usually easier to match than reading every destination. Do not join a line only because other travelers appear to be going to Hong Kong.

1. Leave the train at the platform on Level B4.
2. Follow the arrival route to Level B2.
3. Complete the one-time immigration formalities for both the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong.

Using the metro ticket as if it were the Hong Kong ticket

The metro ride and high-speed train are separate purchases and separate gates.

Copying someone else’s minimum travel time
